Tour of Virtual Worlds and how they Impact Technical Communicators

Mike will demo some features of OLIVE, Second Life, and Blue Mars and try to give an overview of virtual worlds and why you should care. Did you know there is an STC group in Second Life? Someday soon you may attend an STC meeting or conference "in world."

Virtual worlds are in many ways a better world: a world where distance doesn't matter, where you can make it to that international meeting, in spite of flu strains and Icelandic volcanoes. Virtual worlds are worlds where like minded people can easily meet, to do business, to learn, train, and explore. They are also among the most over-hyped phenomena since the Segway.

Let's take a quick peek at several virtual worlds that may be coming soon to your desktop. Remember the first time you used a mouse, the first time you sent an email, the first time you engaged in social media? The story probably remains vivid in your mind, but where is the sense of wonder that you felt? Communicating virtually gives that same sense of wonder, which may or may not be conveyed in this presentation.

It will be colorful, it will be fun, and it will definitely be an informal summer presentation. Don't worry, there will still be a slide show, but it will happen "in world," in a Greek temple. Hope to meet you there!

Mike Ziegenhagen

Mike Ziegenhagen has worked as a technical writer and tech pubs manager in the 3D modeling software for more than 15 years, specializing in tutorials for 3D modelers, who create content for simulations and virtual worlds. For the past two years he wrote online help and created video tutorials for a virtual world environment called OLIVE, until it succumbed to the global financial meltdown. OLIVE described itself as "Second Life in a business suit." If that doesn't mean much to you, great, this session will be of value to you.

checkicon Location:

YOUR PHONE and COMPUTER!

If you'd like to attend this meeting, we request that you RSVP to the webmaster so we can send you the phone number and ConnectNow URL.

We will be using Adobe's Acrobat Connect for the screen sharing. This has worked quite well at past meetings and requires very minimal setup. When you go to the ConnectNow URL, you'll be prompted to install Flash 10 if it's not already installed .. this just takes a minute (system requirements). If you'd like to make sure everything is set up properly, be sure to RSVP early and contact the webmaster for a quick test drive.

Note that our dial-in number is a toll call (605 area code, South Dakota), so unless you've got a good deal for long distance calls, you might consider using Skype to make the call (at only $0.021/min). This works quite well and comes to about $2 for a 90 minute call. To do this you just need to have a Skype account and buy some Skype Credit. (Contact me if you have questions.)

If you'd like to be able to attend but can't make the long distance call, please let us know. We're experimenting with alternate methods for virtual meetings, and would like your feedback.

We will open up the virtual meeting room and conference call at 6:45 and will begin the presentation around 7:15. Please plan on joining by 7pm.
